Forty Days in the Desert, on the Track of the Israelites  - Or a Journey from Cairo to Mount Sinai and Petra

Bartlett, W.H.

Bartlett retraces, in a series of steel engravings of almost haunting beauty, the biblical Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, their crossing of the Red Sea, and the giving of the Law at Mt. Sinai. He begins at the Pyramids and travels to Petra also.  He encounters a caravan of pilgrims bound for Mecca.

Camels and palms trees abound. But what is most noticeable perhaps is the starkness of the landscapes - at times almost lunar like. A place of uncommon clarity and directness.

The engraving above is of the St. Catherine monastery.

Steel Engravings, approx. 8" x 6". The engravings are on a very heavy paper and typically have large margins, making them ideal for framing. Some smaller in line pictures are also available.

Publication Date: Circa 1850.
